Growing up I always had a weird appreciation for warehouse conversions. In fact, I remember saying to one of my best friends how I was going to buy and convert a warehouse into my own unique home one day when I grew up. Not exactly tiny, I know, but still unique, interesting, beautiful, functional and different.

Tiny isn’t the only sort of house I like.. I seem to appreciate all sorts of alternative housing. How about you? This one is a two bedroom warehouse with two levels.

“The Daisy House is one of Subiaco’s most unique properties, being designed and hand built by award winning Perth architect Brian Klopper in 1978.” (source)

What did you like best about this warehouse conversion? Personally I’d love to live in something like this because I like how it has small space design ideas implemented into a more spacious structure. I think it’s so cool for a family. So much better than a cookie cutter McMansion.

This crab house in Spain simply amazes me so I had to share it with you. It’s definitely not something most people can afford, it doesn’t fall into the tiny category, but I thought you’d appreciate it anyway.

It gets power from solar panels and wind turbines nearby. And everything about it is unique. Its shape, walls, roof, interior design and patio. I just appreciate how much thought was put into the home.

Wind gusts are able to just flow right over the structure with ease. The patio is private. And the entire home is very functional and would be a pleasure to share with family and friends.

It’s a 3-bedroom home called The Crab House and is available as a vacation rental in Tenerife, Spain.

Rates are available here.

This property has a total of 4 of these pre-fab modern cabins on the property. Each has been designed and built with “green” in mind since they wanted to have as little impact as possible on the environment there in Rapa Nui, Easter Island, Chile.

They call them Eco Cabanas. And each one utilizes solar power and strategic positioning and design to be as sustainable as possible. Each cabin has two bedrooms and is spacious enough to sleep 6 people. Inside you’ll find a full kitchen, dining area, living room, bathrooms and of course the wonderful front porch areas with hammocks to enjoy the outdoors.

I can totally see myself living happily in one of these within a community or all on our own in our own piece of land off the grid especially since they’re just big enough to raise a family in. How about you?

Unfortunately I couldn’t find interior square footage or exterior dimensions information. What would you guess them to be? Please share in the comments along with what you liked most about these modern cabins in Chile.

By the way if you’re interested you can actually try one of these out on your next vacation. Rates are available here. More photos and info here.

This solar powered house in Spain is elevated from the ground and has a direct view of the Atlantic ocean where you can enjoy amazing sunsets. I can just see the sky shows reflecting on the water right from inside or outside on the deck which wraps around the home.

Another interest part is that the house is on a wind farm and is on the property of the Institute of Technology and Renewable Energies in Montaña Pelada which is a nature park in Spain. According to this article, the home is CO2 neutral and delicately designed and perfected for the climate in the area.

This tiny modern cabin in Australia is great because it brings the nature that outside in. And who wouldn’t appreciate that? It was designed by architect, David Luck, as a weekend spot to relax and recharge in Red Hill.

The structure comprises of internal pods that make up the entire cabin. There’s a ‘pod’ for the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and living areas.

My favorite part is that each area of the home can be opened up to the outside which allows the breeze to come in and also make you feel like you’re outside while you’re still inside. What do you like best about this tiny modern home? And if you were to guess the square footage, what would it be?

I received this entry from one of our readers who I’m pretty sure designed this himself. It’s a trailerable folding houseboat. Which means.. It can function as a travel trailer AND a houseboat.

The best part is that since it folds it can meet the public road standard since it goes down to 8′ wide when folded. Then, when you get it on the water, you can unfold it and enjoy a wrap around deck which is just awesome. Great thinking!

Thanks for sharing your breakthrough 24′ trailerable folding houseboat design with us, Peter!

What do you like best about this trailerable houseboat design? Is there anything that you think could easily be improved? Please- share in the comments below!

This is Daniel Kent’s cabin by a stream in the Angeles National Forest in southern California. He used to be an actor but he has lots of other talents, too. He can brew his own beer, roast his own coffee, teach and run his own business (he owns a coffee shop).

His cabin is home and was designed by a shipbuilder who is good at making the most out of small spaces. The ladder to the loft is retractable, the couch and coffee table turns into a guest bed, and it is made out of reclaimed wood from another cabin that used to be on the property.

Simple Living in a Tiny Travel Trailer

I’m not sure I could live all year long in a travel trailer this small, but I can definitely do it for a short period of time. Like a few weeks or a month or two while enjoying someplace new and different. And this tiny travel trailer seems like it was renovated really nicely. It looks so homey!

If I were living alone and wanted it to remain that way I would consider living simply in something like this because it’s so cost effective and easy to maintain. It’s also a really great way to start living tiny while possibly designing and building your future tiny or small home. See this book if this sparks your interest.

I love the wrap around balcony in this micro cabin treehouse in Cave Junction, OR that hovers over the woods. Can you imagine being a kid and getting to stay here? I would never have forgotten it! When you go in, there are two separate lofts with full beds above the main living area.

The way the bathroom is just part of the living space is a little strange to me. I guess I’d rather have an outhouse and a micro kitchen than the toilet in the living room but still good. And there is a folding partition for privacy when it’s in use or if you just don’t want to look at it!

The listing says there’s a refrigerator and hot water pot but you’re not supposed to cook up there so on the property they have a main house where you can cook. More info here.

This is what I’m talking about! I absolutely LOVE tiny homes like this. Tiny house design on a foundation… Perfect for full-time living. In my opinion, this is what we need more of. The first level is just 200 sq. ft. of space inside then you have the covered porch space and upstairs sleeping lofts.

Sure, the kitchen isn’t really the best but there’s still a refrigerator and microwave just like in a hotel. If it were my cabin I’d make some adjustments there since I like to cook at home. The bathroom is perfect and the couch in the living area pulls out and turns into another bed you can use.

This space in your “extra” loft can be used for storage as well as to creatively house vents for an air conditioning system if you wanted… or, both! I just like how instead of leaving the space open like in most other tiny houses I’ve seen they created a simple and sleek door to cover up whatever you decide to put in there.. Especially if it’s for your air system. But even if it’s for storage, you’d get to make better use of it by closing it in like this. Otherwise it kind of becomes decorative space in my opinion.

Head on over to the Mini-Mobile Cottage blog to learn more about this couple’s tiny house construction project and downsizing journey as it’s really interesting. Also check out their Picasa Photo Album of the entire project here so you can see more photos.

I did not want to mount it on the wall without having the option of being able to cover it up. So I built a cover which you can see above that cover where the TV is mounted. I have very little shelf space so this has been a good addition in that regard.” (source)

Even though these aren’t tiny I thought you’d enjoy these awesome train homes. To me it’s always interesting and fun to see something old still being used especially in such a beautiful way like this. These are currently used as a pretty pricey vacation spot and as you can tell from the photos you can actually sleep up to 12 people between the two trains. Seems like people have been using them for marriages and other events too. I can see it being a really fun place to have a family gathering. But this also serves as a great example of what we can do with things that already exist.
