I find this to be the perfect size for comfortable tiny house living with a significant other. It’s just big enough to each enjoy your own space and not have to bump into each other getting to and from everything but still so small that you hardly have to spend any time cleaning or maintaining.

“As for the experience of being in this 210 square foot house, while I can’t officially live here, I did design it to allow for that someday, and have spent many hours in the space. I have tried moving everything in to see how it fits for the photo shoot.  In short, it’s quite perfect.  There’s room for 175 books, a full sized keyboard and guitar, bar, KitchenAid stand mixer & attachments, a 10 tray food dehydrator, bread machine, 75+ mason jars, sewing machine, suitcase, printer/copier, bags of tools, etc.  There’s even room left over for a combo washer/dryer in the closet (the one thing I’ve felt might be missing).  Most important to me, this all fits without feeling at all cramped or cluttered, and with room for 10 guests to sit comfortably.” (Source)

Did you know this tiny house was built using SIP panels? It’s also part of the showcase tiny house community at Boneyard Studios in DC.

Can you imagine staying a tiny treehouse cabin like this? I can almost hear the sound of the leaves as the wind gusts come and go.

Only downfall is that there doesn’t seem to be plumbing. You have to take a short walk to use a refrigerator, bathroom, etc.

Would You Add a Loft to this Shotgun Shack Tiny House?

Isn’t this tiny shotgun shack cottage just awesome? To me it’s like an oversized tiny house on wheels except this one doesn’t have a loft. If it were mine, I’d definitely add a loft into the design. I’d most likely use it as the bedroom and convert the existing space that’s used as a room into my office.

Foundation Tiny Houses Better for Couples & Families?

I can see a slightly larger design like this working better for couples and small families who want to live tiny/small for a longer period because of the extra space. That’s where it pays to plan to build on a foundation instead of on a trailer even though you lose the mobility.

What Would You Change to Make it Yours?

What would you change about this little house to make it yours? I’m also curious, if you’re building in the future, do you plan on doing it on a foundation so you can go larger or do you plan on building on wheels?

How to Spend a Few Nights in this New Orleans Shotgun Shack

If you happen to be in the New Orleans area you can always check to see if you can book a stay in this house.

“This charming house has central air, jacuzzi tub, rain shower head, flat screen TV, and private backyard area. Two blocks from Magazine Street, restaurants, coffee houses, shops and much more. Convenient to all public transportation. I live next door in separate house, available for information about city. I am a real estate agent and owner. This is a great area to walk. Everything close grocery store if you just want to cook at home kitchen is fully equipped. Take the Magazine bus to Central Business District, French Quarter in 15 minutes. Near to Audubon Park, Garden District, laid back neighborhood, rent a bike, its a great area for bike riding. As one guest mentioned it is truly one of the best parts of Magazine Street.” (source)

I thought you might also like this pyramid shaped micro cabin in Argentina. I ran into it on Airbnb.com because I’m always on there looking for unique cabins and tiny houses that we can rent.

I think that vacationing in tiny homes is one of the best ways learn how to design the perfect one in the future. It’s also a great way to figure out what size house works best for you.

Pyramid Cabin Gives You Better Views?

I like how the shape of the cabin ends up giving you better views because of the angle of the structure. This gives you a better view of the sky, stars and in this case view of the mountains.

How can we make it better? I guess you could put it on stilts and wrap the cabin around a deck/balcony. You might even be able to park your car underneath it.

How to Book your Stay in it

Would You Call this Cabin Tiny or Small?

For me it depends who I’m talking to! Usually I’d call it a small cabin because I’ve seen and been in much smaller cabins than 700 square feet. But if I’m talking to my parents or something I might call it tiny because I know that to them it is tiny. How about you?

Your Favorite Part About this Whimsical Small Cabin near Madrid?

My two favorite parts are the front entrance view. I just think it’s funky looking in such an awesome way. Besides that I’d most likely enjoy the loft area upstairs. I’d spend lots of time in the study up there or just lounging around reading. How about you? What do you like best about it?

How Would You Make this Cabin Yours?

Besides what you already liked best about this small house in the trees what would you change or add to make it better for you? Obviously for me I would use it as a full time cabin so I’d add a kitchen and bathroom. I’d have my bedroom upstairs with direct access to one of the balconies and I’d use the rest of the space for the living area, kitchen and bathroom. The only other thing I’d like to squeeze in there is an area to write in. But I’d probably just do that from the balcony. :)

How about you? What do you like best about this design and what would you change to make it better for you?

More on this Tree Cabin from the Architect

Architecture: David Matero Architecture

Builder: Brent Akins, Housewright Craftsman

“On the Maine coast , a 350 square foot tree house/play house awaits a family for the summer. The original intention was for a tree house built in the trees, but none on the property could handle the structure. Instead, the tree house, nestled within the trees, perches on a precipice on the water side high off the ground.

Intentional use of all natural material further blends the structure into the landscape. Featuring oil dipped western red cedar shingles, shakes, and trim, the Adirondack style architecture also adds to the natural setting and will be reinforced with future branch and twig railings.

Built for kids, the tree house is secretly for adults, too. The interior of the tree house is exposed rough-sawn Douglas Fir. The windows allow high light to enter, which was very important to the Owner. The tree house includes a sleeping loft and balcony on the second floor.” (Source)

Using Recycled Materials to Build Future Homes

I’m always inspired by projects that use old materials like used shipping containers as the base or at least as part of the overall design for a new house, even if it doesn’t end up being very tiny (like this one). For me it’s just interesting to see people use what’s already been manufactured and used to build something new and useful.

How Will You Use Reclaimed Materials to Build Your Future Tiny/Small House?

What ideas and plans do you already have in mind for your future home for using reclaimed materials? Will you build using wood that used to be part of an old barn? Will you use an existing utility trailer as the foundation for your future tiny house?

A Little Bit About the Ernesti Cottage

This Ernesti cottage is actually one of Tumbleweed’s largest house designs and it can be built in two different ways.

Would You Like 2 or 3 Bedrooms?

One as a 2-bedroom 746-square-foot cottage. And the second as a 3-bedroom 843-square-foot cottage with an additional downstairs bedroom in the rear. I think this is a great home for a couple or a young family that’s slowly growing.

Each level is 7’6″ tall so if you’re tall, most likely, you’re still good.

How Much Would it Cost to Build?

These figures do not include paying a contractor for labor. So these figures are simply for cost of materials alone. And it ranges anywhere from around $49,000 to $56,000 according to Tumbleweed’s site.

How to Get the Plans

If you’re interested in building this house or having a contractor do it for you, cool! You can get the plans right here.

katrina-cottage-for-16k-02

If you like the idea of a tiny house but feel that it would be just a little bit too tight then maybe something like this could work?

Sure, it’s not as high quality as a Tumbleweed, Four Lights, PAD Tiny House, or a Tiny Home Builders home.. But it seems really livable (and more spacious).

And if you really wanted to you could fix it up a little to match the quality of the tiny house builders mentioned above. This particular one isn’t in perfect condition (the listing says it needs a little bit of work) but you could always add your own touch.

Your Thoughts on Using a Katrina Cottage as a Tiny Home

What would you add or change to this to make it better? I wouldn’t mind getting a really good deal on one of these and completely renovating it to my own taste.

Is $16K Too Much for a used Katrina Cottage?

How much would you pay for it in its current condition? Because what if you had to work on it a lot? The lister says that he/she is not really too negotiable on price though. But you’ll never know.

If you’re interested in buying or making an offer read/learn more at the original listing here.

Coffee Table that Transforms into a Guest Bed

The Coffee Table Bed by Julia West Home is great because it doubles as a guest bed.

The mattresses stack up when not in use as a bed. This would actually work great in our micro apartment.

Right now we don’t have a coffee table at all. Or any type of guest sleeping situation.

So this would solve both of those problems with one piece of furniture which is pretty cool.

I’m not sure I’d use this on a tiny house on wheels because there’s usually not enough space for coffee tables.

But in a tiny cabin it would work great because you’re not limited on the width of the structure to meet road laws.

This retractable ladder is designed for attics but I thought, why not consider it for a tiny house loft?

But since you can’t really hide it in most tiny house lofts, I don’t think it’s something most of us would do.

Unless you made your loft have an attic door and I’m not sure I’m cool with that. What are your thoughts?

The Rintal retractable stairway is available here.
