When living in a tiny house or any other sort of small space multifunctional furniture can really help make it all that more better. It doesn’t matter whether you’re living in a tiny space or you’re sharing a normal home with several people. Design can make everything work better. And smarter. In this case you can hide your bed and bring out a table. Or you can hide them both and enjoy clear, clean, open space. (Via Top Interior Design.)

“The corrugated steel cylinders of Silo House are both a nod to the grain elevators of upstate New York and a key component of its solar thermal system. Its three silos/rooms (living room, bedroom, kitchen) flank a square courtyard, and a photovoltaic canopy hovers above the whole. More than 150 Cornell students worked on Silo House for the 2009 Solar Decathlon, and it is now a private residence on Martha’s Vineyard.” (source)

“Silo House puts on a clinic in how to decorate round rooms, and gives another answer for the perennial question “Where should I put the bed?” With a few turns of a hand crank, this platform bed disappears into the ceiling. The bathroom is in the hallway between the bedroom and kitchen, whose center island contains a sink, stove, convection oven, refrigerator, and dishwasher—and can be converted into a large dining table.” (source)

More information directly from Cornell University on this silo house is available here.

As you might already know, I’m a big fan of A-frames. And this one is jut awesome to me. I absolutely love it. All I can hope for is that there’s an upstairs balcony in the back so I can go there right after I get up in the morning and right before I go to bed at night. Unfortunately I don’t have any interior photos to share with you. But I thought the outside was still beautiful and I think you might agree.

headboard-storage-idea-for-small-spaces

Originally designed to hold your decorative pillows throughout the night while you’re sleeping so you don’t have to stack them on a chair or throw them on the floor right before bed. But I thought, for us tiny house people, this idea can be used for a number of other things. There’s not a ton of room in the headboard but it can be used to store sheets, books, pillows, remotes and maybe even your laptop?

What are your thoughts on this headboard storage furniture idea? Does it open up your mind to somewhere else that you can create storage out of wasted space? If so, please share in the comments below and help us spread the word with a “Like” or share.

Vintage VW Bug Rooftop Camping Set Up

Earlier today I showed you a modern version of this where the BMW Group is toying with the idea of offering their Mini Cooper customers camping and even teardrop trailer packages. I think this is a pretty smart move although we both know you can always find DIY solutions that are much cheaper. But for those of us who don’t have the time for night and weekend projects, this might just do the trick.

For the rest of us, there’s always options like this. Use your current vehicle and match it up with affordable products like this (a rooftop tent) to create your own off grid vehicular camping solution.

What ideas do you have to turn your current vehicle into an adventure machine? Please share in the comments below. And if you want help us spread the word with a “Like” or share using the buttons below.

We don’t get to go inside this tiny red cottage on wheels but it’s one that I definitely still had to share with you. It’s something that photographer Katharina M Miller ran into while arriving in Longyearbyen, Svalbard and I just thought it was too cool not to share with you. I love how there are tiny houses (on trailers!) all over the country. Slowly but surely folks are finding ways to use these wonderful structures and the idea of building them on trailers to not only get by codes but to enjoy the benefits of a mobile tiny cabin.

“Here’s a little bit of my tiny house building story and some of the things I learned in the process. I hope this information will help or possibly inspire a few future tiny house builders, in the same way I was greatly supported by all you guys who shared your stories before me. The best things about this project were the support I received from friends and family, and getting to learn so many new things this year.” (source)

Wanted to show you this beautiful treehouse cabin in the woods. It’s hard for me to figure out whether or not they used a spiral staircase to get up there or some other method? Either way looks like an awesome getaway cabin up in the trees. And it seems like there’s enough space to include all the amenities of home. Can’t beat the upstairs balcony with a view either!

Ceiling Hammock Sleeping Loft for Tiny Houses?

I thought this was a unique idea for tiny houses or maybe any small cabin. To build a hammock style sleeping loft where you can see right through to the first level of the home. This gives the illusion of more space and vaulted ceilings while still being able to use the loft space that would otherwise just go to waste. Do you think you would do this in a tiny house on wheels? Would you be able to sleep there? I had to ask.. (via Gessato)

“What began in 2007 as a unique speculative project for Austin-based DIRTCO Construction, quickly evolved into a thriving business with a cause. Founded by rancher and environmentalist, Tracen Gardner, his idea for Reclaimed Space has grown from an appreciation and respect for the land upon which he was raised to an applied system for sustainable living. Initially, the prototype was designed with four core beliefs: proper orientation, sustainably built using reclaimed and non-toxic materials, energy efficient, and a transportable structure. Currently Reclaimed Space offers numerous customizable floor plans, all offering the ability for complete off-grid living without having to sacrifice the modern amenities that are viewed today as essential.” (source)

Not everyone is down for sleeping lofts in tiny houses for several reasons.. Some just don’t like the risk. Others just aren’t the agile anymore.

But another use for a ladder is to simply get to those out of reach places in the kitchen as shown above. Or to just access your storage loft and get things in and out of there when needed.

What did you like best about this 260-square-feet railroad boxcar caboose to tiny house in the woods conversion?

“In the middle of beautiful Lake Washington, nestled amid four acres of wooded land, sits a tiny red caboose from 1949. Colorfully out of place among the giant evergreen trees and sprawling rhododendron, it’s a small jewel full of light and warmth. Full-height picture windows on one side overlook a large 8 foot by 20 foot private deck, all the better to take advantage of a sweeping western view of the wooded ravine and of Lake Washington. The railroad car sits on actual rails and serves as a live/work space for the Davidson family and for the occasional (and lucky) renter.” (source)

Sliding Doors to Hide your Stacking Washer and Dryer in Tiny Homes

sliding-doors-to-hide-your-stacking-washer-dryers-in-tiny-houses

Beautiful custom sliding doors like the one you see above can be used to disguise your stacking washer and dryer in a tiny house or for any other sort of storage space.

I love how in this case they used what seems to be like an old office door. It even still has the corporate logo on the window. And if you don’t like the idea of using a combo washer dryer in your small space, you can always plan and design for stackable units instead.

This way your clothes dry faster because with the all in one units it just isn’t the same. Drying takes longer because it’s usually not vented.

I thought this basic bunk bed design would be great for a tiny house or a really small cabin where any children might be sharing a room. It seems like a basic design that most carpenters would be able to do for you and if you focused on it I’m sure you could build it too.

Tiny Treehouse Cabin with a Balcony

I can’t seem to figure out how you get up there but this tiny treehouse cabin with a balcony made my jaw drop this morning. What a spectacular view from up there and I’m a sucker for balconies, too, even though I’m a little afraid of heights.

If only there were some sort of lift to help get us up there, right? Now that would be cool. Because climbing up and down this thing would be the scariest part of it all.

Solar-Powered, Water-Recycling SIP Tiny Home

Anytime students are designing and building tiny houses I’m happy because this means our future generations are exploring ways of making housing more affordable, smarter, and better for the environment.

That’s what students at Ohio State University did with the creation of the POD Home. I encourage you to watch the video below to learn more.

Video Tour

It took students three years to design and build this Pod House where it now stands at the Center of Science and Industry.

Another cool fact about the house is that it’s designed with SIPs (Structurally Insulated Panels). This provides a strong shell with the best insulation possible.

The roof collects power from the sun using solar panels and it even collects, cleans and reuses grey water. The POD Home has also been apart of the education process at the OSU Solar Decathlon.

If you’ve been thinking about building or buying a tiny house on a trailer and want to travel with it, have you ever considered something like this instead? I point it out just because it’s lighter, smaller and in general just easier (and cheaper) to tow around than stick built home on wheels. And with some effort you can really take an old vintage trailer and turn it into something like this. For more photos and info on this pink Holiday House travel trailer go here.
