I absolutely love how they’ve got the kitchen set up outside this way the interior doesn’t smell like food and it avoids all the oil build up and stuff like that which always happens over time especially in a tiny space. I LOVE this porch.

Small, sweet, quiet, eco-minded guesthouse and sauna perched on a ravine in the forest 1 1/2 miles from Seneca Lake and the Finger Lakes Wine Trail and 3 miles from the Finger lakes National Forest. The cabin sits in the woods on the edge of my yard and gardens with my small house about 200 feet away. This is luxury camping.

There is a screened-in porch facing the ravine set up as a living room but shares it with a shower, claw foot bathtub and gas stove. Outside, a deck with seating, fire pit (with firewood) and a clean, composting outhouse about 20 feet from the cabin. There is no toilet inside the cabin. On the inside there is a small kitchen, table and chairs and a door to wood-fired cedar sauna with an opening window to the porch/bath.” (Source)

fold-away-bunk-beds-for-tiny-houses-2

Wanted to show you these hiding bunk beds today because I think they’re perfect for small spaces especially tiny houses. If you have young children and want to build your own cabin or small home this is a great way to squeeze the kids in.

And they’ll be able to fold away the beds and use their space for play during the day. Unfortunately these beds are really pricey but the design is great and make for some serious inspiration when going tiny or when you’re trying to get the most out of your space.

I thought you might find this converted school bus a bit inspiring for simple living. I’ve always liked the idea of using reclaimed materials to build a home. And even better the idea of using something like an old school bus or even a used shipping container to create a new home.

And this photo just says so much to me. This couple looks to be focused on the right things. Each other. And their new family (she looks pregnant). Keeping things simple, not worrying about money and just building a good life without using or needing much.

“In the size of an internationally standardized freight container a wooden container has been developed with different variants for residential uses. The box can be shipped around the world and placed with standard lifting and transport systems for containers.” (source)

This tiny house is designed to be movable so it can be placed just about anywhere as long as you can get to and from there. Another idea for these structures is to use them in groups to create permanent or temporary container villages.

So they can be used in disaster situations. But they can also be used to house students, workers and folks in desperate need of housing throughout the world.

The company decided to create a wooden container versus using recycled steel because of repair and maintenance reasons. When asked why a wooden container, here’s what the organization had to say, “Steel containers are used worldwide. But wear, repair and maintenance of steel materials are more costly (in terms of purchasing costs, welding, etc.) than for wooden materials.”

They continue by saying, “Wood structures can be repaired cheaper and easier.” In addition, “Living in a wooden home is healthier and more comfortable than one made of steel.”

This tiny modern cabin was built by a client of Olson Kundig Architects who fly-fishes on the Olympic Peninsula. For this reason the cabin has shutters that completely enclose and secure the cabin when the owner is away.

The reason it’s on stilts is to keep the cabin safe during occasional floods that occur in the area. It was built using steel and structural insulated panels (SIPs). Most of the cabin was prefabricated off site.

The cantilevered roof gives solar shading while protecting the structure from strong storms. The shutters open and close using a custom steel rod. The hardware was originally designed for large barn doors.

Both of these micro cabin models are relatively easy to move around with a forklift. They’re built with quality materials. You can even add a bathroom as an addition to one of these if you wanted. There are more optional upgrades too.

I can see these being used in campgrounds but they’d also be great to put on your land to build a micro tiny house community for your family somewhere. In some areas you might even be able to put one in your backyard.

500 Sq. Ft. Tiny Cabin: Simple Living in your own Homestead

500-sq-ft-tiny-cabin

I love tiny houses on wheels. But for true full time simple living I’d prefer to have a more spacious cabin like this 500 square foot tiny cabin on a foundation with a roomy upstairs sleeping loft/bedroom.

I like the windows and the screened in porch too. The other neat part about a structure like this is that it’s relatively easy to add on to it if you wanted to or had to.

So if you needed more space for whatever reason whether it be for work, your hobbies, or because your family is growing?

The other cool part about having your own homestead (land) is that you can also build separate structures for any of your other needs. There can be a shed for your tools and lawn mower. A separate shed for your work and hobbies. And even separate cabins for other members of the family.

Tiny Log Cabin with Screened in Porch on a Budget

If you’re a fan of tiny log cabins like I am I thought you’d also love this one. Notice how they used an all-in-one kitchen unit to complete the kitchen area. The cabin is really basic but seems built to high quality standards. I’d enjoy the all wood interior, how about you?

It’s interesting too how you can’t see the porch in the second photo. I take it that it was added on later on along with the deck. That’s one of the best parts about building on your own land on a normal foundation because you can always add on quite easily and inexpensively.

What would you guess the budget for this project was? I’d say somewhere around $12,000 for materials at most. That figure, of course, doesn’t include paying for labor as I’m assuming it was a DIY project.

I found this skinny house to be really interesting. I mean, it’s a 3-story cottage and it’s still pretty tiny! Not sure what else to say about it, so I gathered a few of my favorite quotes on simplicity to share with you and I’d love to hear your thoughts on the cabin and the quotes in the comments if you’d be willing to share.

3 of my Favorite Quotes on Simplicity

“We ascribe beauty to that which is simple; which has no superfluous parts; which exactly answers its end.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

“… in all the things, the supreme excellence is simplicity.” – Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

“The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak.” – Hans Hofmann

“Although built with five wind- and water-resistant ISBUs and a concrete foundation, the home provides a contemporary look and feel; when you look at the exterior or walk inside, it does not feel at all like you are walking into large metal boxes stacked on top of each other. Measuring in at 1,600 square feet, the home took about 90 days to complete at a cost of roughly $100 per square foot.” (source)
