Kandovan Village Stone Home Part of Large Cave Dwelling Community

Homes like this just get me thinking. Not only do they make me feel fortunate but they also get me to think of how else us, as humans, could live. And how we can use our current environment and convert it to shelter with minimum effect on earth. These sort of unique structures just get me thinking. And I’m sure they do the same for you. It’s eye opening and it’s interesting to learn the history behind things like this. More photos on this cave village are available here along with the history behind it.

Here’s what the Heritage Institute has to say about it:

What makes Kandovan village so unique is that many of its homes have been made in caves located in cone-shaped, naturally formed compressed volcanic ash formations that make the landscape look like a gigantic termite colony. This method of dwelling makes the residents modern-age cave dwellers or troglodytes. (Troglodyte means cave dweller: somebody living in a cave, especially somebody who belonged to a prehistoric cave-dwelling community. Troglodyte also means somebody living in seclusion.)

It is our understanding that the unusual cone formations were formed from volcanic ash and debris spewed during an eruption of Mount Sahand being hardened and shaped by the elements over thousands of years. The formation of volcanic ash cones is local to Kandovan. Elsewhere, the ash blanketed the land. The existence of a high volume of ash and pumice far from Sahand’s crater indicates that Mount Sahand erupted with a gigantic explosion in the distant past.

Unique Two Story Tiny Cottage

This is a 19th century tiny cottage in Fredericksburg, Texas. They were originally built with the intention to temporarily house families after traveling long distances for church services.

So essentially they served as inexpensive vacation homes in a way. I really like the front porch with the rocking chairs. There’s something about that to me that’s just so relaxing.

There really are so many ways to use tiny houses. They can be used for business, vacation, worship and so much more.

Why do you want to have a tiny house? And what for? Would it be your only home or would it be for a reason like this? I love the idea of multiple tiny house ownership if one is easily able to.

Learn more about 19th century cottages like this one over here at my friend Kent’s Tiny House Blog post where he originally shared this photo. Kent also publishes the popular Tiny House Magazine which you might also enjoy.

Small Two Story Cottage on a Foundation with a Balcony

I just love small houses like this because I feel there should be way more of them. I think that if developers would build homes like this that there would actually be a lot of success in selling them, wouldn’t you say? I mean, I’d buy or rent one. It’s just so sad that there are hardly any available. Where I live there just aren’t many at all. And if there are someone is happily living in one and isn’t going to leave.

So why don’t real estate developers realize this and capitalize on the trend? To me it seems like an opportunity to create affordable housing. And they can still turn a profit. Why do you think it is that we don’t get to see more homes like this being designed, built and offered for people? My thoughts are that it’s going to begin happening more and more. And if we can help encourage folks to do so, we can make this a better world for people.

My husband bought this small cabin about 6 months ago. The gentleman that started building it about 7 years ago became sick and could not finish it. It sat for 5 years without anything being done to it. The logs were never sealed and were in bad shape. Floor joist were rotted out because it sat with no doors on it. We can only work on it one day a week. It is 70 miles from where we live now in Chattanooga and we both work. Hopefully we will be far enough along to move in by Thanksgiving. It is 16×38, 2 stories, It will be 1 bedroom and an office upstairs, Living room, kitchen, and bath downstairs.

“Pre-fab Cottage is a modern, modular pre-fabricated structure based on a 14 foot square module. The cottages are built using structural insulated panels for floor, walls and roof, creating an extremely energy efficient building envelope. The 14′ x 14′ cottage base module can be assembled in several combinations and is adaptable to many different site conditions aided by its unique precast concrete foundation system. The project featured here is a newly completed residence utilizing four of the modules and a connector hallway. Built in a shop in Traverse City, Michigan the cottage was transported in sections to its site 60 miles to the South in Manistee County. Once transported the cottage modules were then assembled in five hours.

This cottage project is unique to Northern Michigan and utilizes as many products from the local area as possible. The cottage design reflects the character of traditional cottage structures found in the area, blended with energy efficient materials and design.” (Source)

Ideas like this one are essential for tiny house living. This space saving spice rack is the perfect antidote for a micro kitchen where making the best use of space is essential for utility and happiness.

Something like this is relatively simple for most carpenters to put together. Even for someone who doesn’t have that much experience with carpentry can probably design and build something like this from scratch.

It’s a great idea that you can use in a variety of homes like for:

  • RVs
  • Teardrops
  • Tiny Houses
  • Small Homes
  • Cabins
  • Guest Houses
  • Shed Conversions
  • And more..

And if you’re not a DIY person Amazon for instance has a variety of options you can simply order and install easily. Here are my top 5 favorites which also happen to have some great reviews.

Even though this is not a tiny house (I’m not sure how big it is, actually), I thought this could be of use to those of us who want to make the best use of our space.

Not only do I love the staircase but the appliances seem to fit in perfectly. It’s seamless and streamlined. And I think it’s a great use of space. I would love to see someone use these ideas in a tiny house somehow.

If not, it’s still a great design idea for any sort of foundation tiny or small house, don’t you think? I find it to be such a modern, clean and minimalist look. I really like it.

Could you imagine this sort of idea being cooperated into a tiny house?

Tropical Tiny Cabin: Logs or Bamboo?

I love tiny simple cabins like this one on normal foundations. Although tiny houses on trailers are great I honestly don’t like the idea of towing them, taking care of the tires, leveling them, and things like that. So for me tiny or small on a foundation is my preference. And this cabin is right up my alley. It’s peaceful and I really like the unique siding that they used. I can’t tell if it’s bamboo or logs. But I love the covered front porch to chill out and enjoy a tea in the morning.

How to Design a Space Saving Drawer Under your Sink

space-saving-sink-drawer-for-your-kitchen

I found out about this space saving under the sink drawer idea for your kitchen over on Pinterest and All About You. Then I found the manufacturer of the product which is Blum. They call it the TANDEMBOX Sink Drawer. You can actually order it directly through Amazon right here though.

It’s a drawer that wraps around the sink which is awesome because it uses every available inch of space that’s under there normally goes unused. This allows you to store tiny gadgets and kitchen cleaning materials without having to look at them all the time.

This got me thinking, though, “what other products like this might be available out there?”

And, “can a person who’s handy design and build one of these to custom fit their sink?”

Of course they can! So don’t be shy to show these photos to your carpenter and designer. You’ll be surprised at how simple it is for someone with carpentry experience to create something like this. All they need is the idea.

But for those of you who want something ready made that you can simply order and install I thought I’d do some Amazon research for you so we can see what else is out there. And you can either order one of these directly or use the ideas here to create your own customized version that perfectly fits your design.

727 Square Feet Modern Small House in the Perfect Setting: The Tamarack

I know it’s just a sketch but isn’t this really such a perfect small house for many of us? It’s called The Tamarack.

It’s a total of 727 square feet of living space with a 210 square foot patio. As large as it may seem relative to tiny houses, it’s only a one bedroom one bath. But it seems really spacious.

Set out in what looks like to be a peaceful environment right by the ocean. You could go to sleep to the sounds of the waves or enjoy the fireplace outside with your close ones.

The kitchen and living room downstairs and all seem spacious enough to be more than comfortable living for you and your family or for when you have visitors.

The upstairs room houses the bedroom and what looks to be a study/working area. It’s all one large open space though. So I guess if you really wanted to you can divide the upstairs and have two bedrooms.

If I could change anything it would be add an upstairs balcony into the design. How about you? By the way you can see more photos (including the floor plan) and learn more on this house here.

Wouldn’t You Love This Balcony Window For Your Tiny House?

$

window-balcony

It seems like almost everyday there’s a new cutting-edge design I run into that can be used in tiny houses and other small spaces. This window transforms into a balcony. Wouldn’t it be cool to have a feature like this on a tiny house?

Window design company Fakro developed this state-of-the-art window/balcony combination and here is how they describe it:

  • An innovative, large window whose sashes when opened crate a balcony in the loft. The upper top hung sash opens upwards, whereas the lower sash can be tilted forwards, allowing easy access to the balcony recess. The sash when rotated through 0° to 45° is supported by an innovative auxiliary mechanism which allows leaving the open sash in any position within this range.
  • The upper sash can be raised steplessly up to 45°. Side barriers are integrated into the bottom sash and slide out during opening. When closing the lower sash, balcony barriers are hiding in the window, thus they are not visible above the roof. Concealed under the window flashing elements, they do not collect dirt or spoil the aesthetics of the roof.

Read more about the windows characteristics here.

Could you imagine it as a window on the loft of a tiny house? How cool would that be?! I don’t know about you, but I’d love to see that done!

Modern Prefab UFO Tiny House from the 60s

$

ufo-house

This is a totally out of this world tiny house designed by architect Matti Suuronen in 1968.

The nature of it’s design reflects back to the 60s and 70s.

It was accommodated to fit up to 8 people and constructed out of reinforced plastic.

They had a plan to mass produce it (prefab) to make it affordable for everyone.

It was light-weight so it can be mobile but had to be transported by a helicopter.

Anyways, here are the specifications from the original futuro website along with more photos of it below:

    •  polyester exterior
    •  colors white, light-blue, yellow or red
    •  height 4 meters
    •  diameter 8 meters
    •  weight 4000 kilos
    •  floor space 25 square meters
    •  20 oval shaped windows
    •  retractable stairs entrance
    •  6 bed-seats plus 1 double bed-seat
    • central fire place and bbq
    •  kitchen
    •  bathroom with toilet
